New Leash on Life

One of our area prisons has begun a program called A New Leash on Life. This is something like you might have seen on television called  "Cell Dogs". Each dog will have dual trainers and spend six hours per day of supervised training. We are doing this as an effort to help our dogs find their "forever homes", and to teach the prisoners  to love and nurture. The fee to adopt one of the trained dogs is $150. This includes the spay/neuter, all shots including rabies, worming, flea treatment, heart worm test and preventative treatment, and the basic obedience training. For more information call 828-733-6312 and speak to Charlene or email us at adoptapet@vol.com.

The Dogs Meet Their Trainers..

Bubba with lead trainer Glen Andrews and assistant Javier Alexander!

Howdy folks! My name is Bubba and I'm a country dog gettin an education here at MVCI. I am one and a half to two year old hound mix that has the look of a large beagle. My favorite things to do are eating, playing, and sleeping...but eating is the best. My two trainers brag about how smart I am. They are teachin this hound some manners as well as many commands such as; heel, sit, stay, lay down, come and lots more. It's all pretty easy for me. Hey, I can even shake paws with you if you come see me! I even know how to play dead when someone says POW! Are you lookin for a friendly easy goin sort of companion? I'm the hound for you.

Claira with lead trainer Teryl Ponder and assistant Robert Lee!

Hi my name is Claira! I am a 2 year old female Redbone/Boxer mix. I am going through basic obedience training here at Mountain View. So far I've learned to love my leash, sit, stay, lie down, and come on command. I am also completely house broken. My trainers Terryl and Lee are teaching me to stop and sit when they stop today. And even though I am shy I make up for it by being such a smart girl. While my trainers  have been teaching me their tricks, I've been doing some training of my own. I've already taught them to do my favorite things, cuddle and go on long walks. I still have some work to do and thing's to teach my trainers. But I'll be done soon and will need someone to love me like they do. I hope that your family will need my love as much as I do your. I'll be waiting for you. See you soon!

Delilah with lead trainer Obrien Brown and assistant Larry Hanna!

I would like to take a little time to tell you about Delilah because she is a very loving pet. We have been working with her for 4 weeks now and she already knows how to sit, stay and down. The biggest thing we have worked on is come and she has it all. Hey let me say she will walk on the leash very good before I go on. The thing we love about her the most is she plays good with the other dogs and people. Now if you want a very nice and loving pet come and see Ms. Delilah. You will love and enjoy her.

Samantha "Sammy" with lead trainer Timothy Hayes and assistant Samuel Dwiggins!

Hello meet Sammi. She's a Staffordshire mix. Beautifully colored brown and white. She has a real loving personality. She'll be a great family dog. In just 3 weeks she has learned by words sit down, up, and shake with both hands. She has just recently learned to roll over. So she's very smart and catches on quick. She's also house broken. No number 1 or 2 inside she will go to the door to let you know she has to go. She's also leash trained. If she gets too far ahead she will turn her head around and wait till you catch up. Her best characteristic is she is a real easy approachable gal. She loves being petted on the top of her head, have the back of her ears ruffled also her chest scratched. She loves being brushed and will lay down to enjoy the moment. So what are you waiting for? Hurry on down! Contact the Avery Humane Society today at 866-473-6312 toll free or email Charlene at adoptapet@vol.com to meet Sammi or one of her friends. Make your life and theirs complete.

Bubba thinks there should always be time to sit in the sun!

Sammy and Bubba are all about playtime, while Claira likes getting the attention.

Delilah shows the rest of the dogs how to "stay" on command.

Delilah needs a family who will spend lots of cuddle time.

This little diva loves to sit in the sun.

Delilah can't wait to read the new newsletter! Perhaps Xavier can read it to her.

It is amazing what a treat can teach a dog!

Claira loves to sniff around and likes to get a good petting.

Samuel likes that Sammy doesn't mind a good brushing!

While Delilah was getting a good petting the other three were taking a sniff break.

Shaking paws seems to be a favorite with the dogs.

It is hard for the guys to give up their friends.

Patches can shake hands and give high five!

After the training there is time to play and rest.

This is Ralph's little hat! He had a little nick on his ear and they all were concerned
and put this little collar on to keep him comfortable. I don't think anything could bother this little fella!

Madison can take a treat from her trainers mouth
without even a nip!

This is Lucy on graduation day! The other inmates
made caps and gowns for all the dogs.

This is Ziggy waiting with her trainer for graduation!

Honey Bear and the rest can jump through hoops!

Lucy and her trainers show just how high they are willing to jump!

Dog Prayer

O' Great Dog Spirit
Whose bark I hear in the winds:
and whose breath give life to all the world, hear me! I am small and weak, I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the human life.
Make my paw respect the things human have made and my ears sharp to hear human voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things that human have taught me. Let me learn the lesson that human have hidden in every part of a human body. I seek strength, not to be greater than dogs, but to fight my greatest enemy-myself. Make me always ready to come to you with a clean paw and  straight eyes. So when dogs life fade, as the fading sunset my spirit  may come to you without shame.
